Management of irregular gingival line after dental trauma of maxillary incisors

Daniel Ziskind Israel

The esthetic restoration of maxillary incisors after dental trauma poses a challenge to prosthodontists and orthodontists.
In many cases the anesthetic appearance is related to the irregular clinical crown lengths of the fractured or traumatically avulsed teeth.
(Fig. 1).

The correct gingival line can be camouflaged by adding pink colored ceramic to the crown gingival margin (Fig. 2),or by an interdisciplinary (orthodontic, periodontic, and prosthodontic) approach (Fig. 3), which includes orthodontic forced eruption followed by gingival line recontouring, prior to the prosthetic stage. Such coordinated interdisciplinary evaluation and treatment are necessary to get good results for the benefit of the patient.
The prosthetic result may be affected by minor misallocation of the tooth, sometimes created during the orthodontic forced eruption. The final position of a tooth after forced eruption can be calculated according to the crown dimension
(Fig. 4) and the available eruption distance (Fig. 5). (2)
